ChatGPT prompts for dietitians and nutritionists: 12 prompts to save time

Prompts for a dietitian's or nutritionist's routine: check-ins between sessions, education handouts, recipe ideas, shopping lists, social content and practice organization. AI helps you produce and organize. Assessment and nutrition plans stay with you.

How to get the most out of these prompts

  1. 1Don't use AI to build a meal plan for a real client without your own assessment. Use it for supporting material and writing.
  2. 2Don't paste identifiable client data (names, lab results, photos) into public tools.
  3. 3Check nutrition values and quantities: AI can get numbers wrong with great confidence.

Client follow-up

Weekly check-in between sessions

To keep clients engaged.

You are a registered dietitian. Write 4 weekly check-in messages for clients in ongoing support, one for each week of the month, each with a simple question about their routine, encouragement and a short tip. Warm, non-judgemental, up to 4 lines each. Focus of the program: [general goal, e.g. building steadier eating habits].

Reply to a client who went off plan

When a client says they 'blew it'.

A client wrote: '[message, e.g. I overdid it at the weekend]'. Write a reply of up to 5 lines that responds without guilt, normalizes the slip, gives one practical step for tomorrow and reinforces your relationship. Don't mention weight or numbers.

Session summary for the client

After a session, from your notes.

Turn the notes below (with nothing that identifies the client) into a summary for the client: what we agreed, goals for the next phase as bullets, 3 practical tips and the date of the next session. Plain language, up to 12 lines.
[NOTES]

Education handouts

Practical guide on a topic

To give clients as supporting material.

Create a one-page education handout on [topic, e.g. building a balanced plate] for adult clients. Structure: why it matters, 5 practical guidelines, everyday examples and common mistakes. Don't give exact quantities: use [CHECK] where guidance depends on individual assessment.

Organized shopping list

To support a meal plan.

Using the foods below, organize a shopping list by store section (produce, meat and fish, pantry, dairy), with tips on choosing and storing each group. Don't change the foods on the list.
[FOODS FROM THE PLAN]

Recipe ideas from the plan

To add variety for the client.

Suggest 6 simple recipes, ready in under 30 minutes, using mainly these ingredients: [list]. For each: name, ingredients, method in 4 steps and one variation. Don't give nutrition values: I'll calculate them.

Content and new clients

Myth-busting carousel

For Instagram.

Create a 6-slide carousel busting the myth '[myth, e.g. eating late makes you gain weight]', in plain language, light in tone and based on general nutrition guidance. No weight-loss promises, no before-and-after photos, and in line with your professional body's rules. Close by inviting people to learn about your services.

Quick recipe video script

For Reels or TikTok.

Write the script for a video of up to 45 seconds showing the recipe [recipe]. A hook in the first 3 seconds, quick steps and a dietitian's tip at the end. Note what to say and what to show.

How your service works

For your website, bio or when someone asks.

Write up to 10 lines explaining how my nutrition service works: [format, frequency, channels, what the client receives]. Who it's for, how it starts and what to expect. Friendly and professional, with no promised results.

Practice routines

Organized intake questionnaire

To review your first-session form.

Review and organize an intake questionnaire for [audience, e.g. busy adults], grouping questions by topic, removing repetition and suggesting what's missing. Bullet points.

Appointment messages

To standardize confirmations and follow-ups.

Write text messages of up to 4 lines to: confirm an appointment, remind about a follow-up, reply to someone who wants to reschedule and invite back someone who hasn't returned in [X] months. Use [NAME], [DATE] and [TIME].

Study a research paper

To keep up with evidence faster.

I'll paste an abstract. Explain: the research question, study type, sample, main results, limitations and what it changes (or doesn't) in practice. Separate what's in the text from your interpretation.

AI for dietitians and nutritionists: FAQ

Can dietitians use ChatGPT to create meal plans?

AI can help with recipe ideas, lists and supporting material, but a client's nutrition plan depends on your individual assessment. Plans generated by AI without assessment can get quantities wrong and ignore health conditions. Use it to save time on writing and organizing, and keep nutrition decisions with you.

Is it safe to put client data into AI?

Not into public tools. Health data is sensitive and protected by privacy rules (such as HIPAA in the US or UK GDPR) and professional confidentiality. In your prompts, use generic descriptions, without names, lab results or photos. For regular professional use, choose paid plans with terms that prevent your data being used for training.

Can I use AI for my social media?

Yes, and it helps a lot with posting consistently. Review everything and follow your professional body's rules: accurate information, no promised results and no before-and-after photos. AI is great at turning technical topics into light, readable content, but you're responsible for what's published.

Which tool should I use?

These prompts work in ChatGPT, Claude and similar tools. Free versions work well for handouts, recipes and content ideas. For anything involving client information, a paid plan with clear data terms is the safer choice, and anonymizing remains best practice.
